DEAN'S QUARTERLY NEWLETTER, Vol. 10, No. 3, 03/01/2007

HIGHLIGHTS OF WINTER 2007:

The birth of my great nephew Roman, the son of my niece Rachel and her boyfriend Justin, occurred early in December.  I headed to Minnesota the following week to check out the little bundle.  Parents and child seem to be adapting to the new regimen, and I look forward to the next opportunity to see a little bigger bundle.  It was unusually mild weather, and of course, I enjoyed the time in Minnesota to catch up with family and friends.

Trip to Colorado and Arizona:   During 10 days in mid-January, I headed west to visit my friend Tim and his family in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, my cousin Darin in Boulder, Colorado, and my mother at her winter retreat in Apache Junction, Arizona.  It was -20 degrees F the morning of the day we attempted to teach Tim’s 3 ½ year old daughter Katherine how to ski, though it had warmed up by that point.  Another afternoon we lounged in the local hot springs after a fresh snowfall, and in the evening Tim and I spent several hours catching up with some old songs that we’ve played and sang together countless times over the years, plus some new ones.

My visit with cousin Darin included another opportunity to see him in his element at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, where he operates the 3-D visualization lab.  His colleagues and I had interesting discussions about global warming and the arguments still put forward by a handful of remaining skeptics.  In the coming months, Darin will be packing up and moving to Belgium, where his wife Anne has already moved.  (See last quarter’s newsletter).

Unfortunately, the time spent in Arizona with my mother was hampered by her not feeling well.  Deep congestion and a lack of energy, which her doctor later speculated as possible pneumonia, kept her mostly confined.   One night, it was downright scary when I woke to the sound of a crash in the bathroom and found her on the floor after she had fainted and bruised her head from the fall.  She was on the mend over the several days I visited and was able to enjoy the remainder of her stay through the month of February.  My second cousins, Leroy (and his wife Teresa), Glenn and Wayne were visiting while I was there, and we had a wonderful hike in the desert with their cousin Terry.  That hike also gave us a brief scare and another bruised head and body, when Leroy took a serious spill down a cactus-covered hill.  He was scratched, gashed, bloody and initially a bit disoriented, but was surprisingly resilient and thankfully was able to walk the couple miles back to the car and then drive us home.

Trips to New York City:   Two weekend visits to New York City, one joined by DC friends, Janet and Carol, and the other by my Northern California cyber pal, Susan, were enjoyable getaways.  I particularly enjoyed Greenwich Village coffee houses, the Metropolitan Art Museum, the Lower East Side Tenement Museum and Ellis Island National Historic Monument, the site through which millions of immigrants entered the U.S.

Movies:   The Good Shepard ***, Pursuit of Happiness **1/2, Venus **
