DEAN'S QUARTERLY NEWLETTER, Vol. 12, No. 3, 03/01/2009

HIGHLIGHTS OF Winter 2009:

Inauguration and my cousin's visit -- My cousin Mitch came from northern Minnesota to enjoy Washington DC and the festivities celebrating the inauguration of Barak Obama.  We were both amazed by the crowds, the largest either of us had ever been among, with estimates ranging from 1.2 to 1.8 million people.  It took us five hours, starting at 4 AM, to make it to downtown DC from the outer suburbs on public transit, a distance that under normal circumstances would take little more than a half hour.  In spite of the discomfort that the crowd faced, with the chilly temperatures, lengthy periods of walking and standing and the difficulty of moving around in often highly claustrophobic situations, nearly everyone seemed in phenomenally good spirits, taking great appreciation of the historic nature of the day.  The generally partisan crowd were both wowed by Obama's rhetoric and took satisfaction in what felt to be the change they had been hoping for.

An all-star collection of celebrities were in town for the various events occuring over several days.  Mitch and I attended one of the largest events, a concert in front of the Lincoln Memorial that seemed to include a who's who of big name performers -- U2, Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, James Taylor, Beyonce, John Mellencamp, Sheryl Crow, Pete Seegar, Bon Jovi, Garth Brooks, yada yada.

We also took a train to Philadelphia and spent a couple days taking in the sights, including the Independence Hall, Ben Franklin museum, Phildelphia Mint, museum of art, and Eastern State Penatentury.  We stayed in the same colonial era bed and breakfast that my brother and I had stayed at a year earlier, in the heart of the local nightlife.

Apache Junction, Arizona -- As every year, I visited my mom at our winter retreat in the desert, this time in mid-February.  This year, we were also accompanied for a couple days by my friend Cathy and her husband Mark, who came from L.A. so he could participate in a local marathon.  It was great having them there, and they spoke of liking the area so much that they dreamed of buying property there.  As usual, my mother's cousin Glenn and his then fiancee (wife since early April) Carla also came from Minnesota and stayed at his property next door.  In my absence, Glenn has always been incredibly helpful looking after my mom and in helping maintain our property.
