DEAN'S QUARTERLY NEWLETTER, Vol. 9, No. 4, 06/01/2006

HIGHLIGHTS AND LOWLIGHTS OF SPRING 2006:

In nearly 10 years of writing these quarterly newsletters, this is the least eventful quarter so far.  It’s the first quarter in 8 years that I didn’t travel somewhere.  I hardly ventured beyond the two-mile radius of my apartment, and when I did, it was just to visit friends a half hour from here in DC and the Virginia suburbs.

The two-mile radius in which I hover includes my office and my exclusive hangout, the College Perk Coffee House.  The Perk, as people call it, is not your usual coffee house, but rather a community unto itself.  I nearly spend as much time there as I do in my own apartment.  Located in a large 100-year old farmhouse, with a storied history that includes having once been a brothel, the Perk now has an eclectic clientele of college students, high tech professionals and working class heroes.  Its laid back interior motif features nary a table or chair that matches another.  Meanwhile, people keep pulling the stuffing out of the couch cushions, and no one seems to mind if people stretch out to take long naps.  In addition to the staff and regular customers I’ve come to know, several people rent rooms upstairs and bungalows out back, and occasionally I’ve joined in on parties, barbeques, wine tasting and day-long concerts featuring talented local musicians.

I keep thinking I need to write (or find someone with the talent to write) a pilot show for a television sitcom based loosely upon the quirky characters that frequent the place.  Simply call the sitcom “College Perk”, a name readily designed to attract the young audience that advertisers crave.  Make it sort of a reality-based version of the hit shows “Cheers”, “Friends” and “Northern Exposure”, which is largely what the people there make it seem like.  Add a little good karma, I think the odds of success would be great.

In April, my mother had an angiogram that has since motivated her to make some changes in her diet and exercise regimen.  The hospital is having her work out three times a week and she has started to lose some weight.  She’s already begun to realize some improvements in her energy level and how she feels.

The summer quarter promises to be a more active one for me, with trips to Minnesota and San Diego.  Check back next time!

For those wishing to visit Washington DC, my new location is not nearly as convenient as my old place, which was within easy reach of all the DC attractions.  Still, friends and family are always welcome, and my new apartment is larger and more comfortable than others I have had.

COMING UP NEXT QUARTER (Summer):    Trip to Minnesota and California
