DEAN'S QUARTERLY NEWLETTER, Vol. 11, No. 4, 06/01/2008

HIGHLIGHTS OF SPRING 2008:

Birth of Novalin Orion -- My first great niece was born March 9th, and my nephew Joel and his girlfriend Amber are proud parents. It was fascinating to see this charming little girl born with a full head of jet black hair born to parents who both have far lighter manes. Nevertheless, she definitely has features that remind us of some in our family.

We also received news that my niece Rachel is expecting again. The new child is due sometime this fall and will be Rachel and Justin's second child.

Meanwhile, my nephew Joshua graduated from his program in massage therapy. We're all very proud of him and are lining up to get our massages, because we surely all need this kind (as well as other kinds) of therapy.

Trip to Minnesota -- In late March, I began the first of what will be at least four visits to Minnesota this year. Of course, I always enjoy visiting family and friends, and part of the reason I was happy to come at this time was to see my new great niece Novalin. Another big impetus for this visit was the return of my long-time friend Cathy (Sultan) Ryne. Over 30 years ago, for those who don't know, she and I dated and then lived together for a couple years. After we split up, she moved on to join her parents in California, and later married and had three lovely daughters. Sometime after she married, we reestablished contact, and we manage to catch up with each other periodically.

For Cathy, it was a bit of an emotional homecoming, as it had been over 30 years since she visited my mother's house, where she once lived, and since she had seen some of my relatives and my friend John. It was great fun for me to have her visit, and we both enjoyed singing songs, digging through old photos and letters, and visiting places she hadn't seen in quite some time.

Other springtime events -- The remainder of the springtime was uneventful. I did manage to get out for day hikes with friends in nearby Great Falls Park and Shenandoah National Park. A simulated emergency exercise with officials from my agency got me away for a few days also. Other than that, I mostly hung around close to home and with the quirky folks at the coffee house, sometimes playing guitar and singing on the front porch with them on sunny afternoons.
