DEAN'S QUARTERLY NEWLETTER, Vol. 12, No. 1, 09/01/2008

HIGHLIGHTS OF Summer 2008:

Two Visits to Minnesota -- The Oman family reunion in June compelled me to the town of Little Sauk, Minnesota, where my great grandmother once lived and a place I fondly remember from my youth. Hosted by my cousin Sue and uncle Jim, our extended family more than doubled the town's population of around 80 for the afternoon and evening. People came from far and wide, including my great uncle Ted, who at 89 this year is the oldest of the Oman clan. I had to balance time and attention between discussing the chart I made of the Oman/Francis family tree (which was a big hit with attendees), capturing the event on video, and playing guitar (which I did for over 7 hours).

A second trip to Minnesota in August was inspired by the reception for my newly wed niece Sarah, who married her longtime friend Brian in July. Due to Brian having an appendix burst ten days before their wedding in Las Vegas, it almost didn't occur. Thankfully, he recovered sufficiently to make the trip, accompanied by a significant contigent of friends and relatives, and by the time of the reception in St. Paul, he was largely healed, and the event came off well.

Trip to San Diego -- The GIS (Geographic Information Systems) conference I attend every other year is always a pleasure. 14,000 map makers and research scientists of many stripes from all over the world show off their projects. The brain power gathered under one roof always amazes me. This year, I was joined there for the open house events by my friend Cathy, from the L.A. area, who was visiting her parents in the San Diego area.

On the weekends in San Diego, I first caught up with my friends Hatem and Ismet, and later with my friend Kathy, Hatem's former wife. All are doing well, though Hatem had recently been suffering serious back pain that had him largely bed ridden for a few weeks and was still not quite back to his normal self.

Summer in Beltsville -- Meanwhile, back at home in Beltsville, the summer here lived up to the name of the town I've rendered to it -- DULLSVILLE, particularly after my favorite coffeehouse hangout, the College Perk, suffered an electrical fire that closed it for the time being. "What are we supposed to do now?" I asked my cohorts at "The Perk". There are no other hangouts in the area worthy of our time. With tails tucked between our legs, we all wandered off aimlessly and seem to have scattered completely to the wind, though occasionally I spot fellow lost and disoriented souls driving down the local strip, perhaps wandering into the Starbucks, but it ain't even remotely the same. We want our Perk back!!!

COMING UP NEXT QUARTER (Autumn):    USA rail pass travel, including Visits to New York, Boston, Toronto, Charlston, to and Minnesota for the wedding of my nephew Joshua and his bride Ashley.
