DEAN'S QUARTERLY NEWLETTER, Vol. 9, No. 2, 12/01/2005

HIGHLIGHTS OF AUTUMN 2005:

Trips to Toronto, Minnesota and Boston:

Almost yearly, I return to catch up with friends in Toronto and Boston. The Kosov family (Igor, Alla and Michael) is doing well in Toronto, as are the Milendorfs (Vlad and Val, their sons Michael and Max and their wives Natasha and Olga and children Maria, Jacob, Anna and Sasha) in the Boston area. Their extraordinary warmth and hospitality always compels me back.

Trips home to Minnesota usually feel rushed as I try to have adequate quality time with family and friends, so I allowed myself a little more time when I went in September. My mother put me to work helping her sort through accumulations of stuff in her basement, which put us both a little more at ease. We still had time to do some walks around Lake Como as I did also with my brother and sister-in-law. Ben and I had numerous cribbage matches at his nursing home. Since that time, his nursing home has closed down and he’s been relocated to one in the St. Paul suburb of Stillwater. My extended time allowed a good opportunity to relax with aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and significant others.

My 30-year Johnson High School Reunion was certainly a highlight, but better still was a house party for most of the friends from my high school clique. Twelve of the 15 from that clique, showed up for the gathering. Some of us hadn’t seen each other in nearly 30 years. We felt like time travelers. Though our appearances may have weathered somewhat, everything else about us – our voices, our mannerisms, our spirits -- seemed very much the same. What a thoroughly wonderful evening it was!

For those wishing to visit Washington DC, my new location is not nearly as convenient as my old place, which was within easy reach of all the attractions. Still, friends and family are always welcome, and my new apartment is larger and more comfortable than others I have had.
