Excerpts from postcards sent in March 1986, Dean's World Tour I:

Benidorm, Spain (Costa Blanca)

Spanish rice and seafood (paella)

Hola, buenas tardes!

Beautiful mountains to my right, turquoise sea to my left, perfect weather everyday from above, a bicycle between my legs, and pavement before me -- no flats, no mechanical problems, no robbery, no injury, no accidents -- 7 days, 560 kilometers, Barcelona to Alicante.  To say that the scenery has been an infinite "wow" would be a gross understatement!  The shoreline is like the Big Sur of California.  Along the road are olives, lemons, and billions of oranges upon which I can snack.

Usually, the road shoulder has been wide and good for bicycles, but at other times I have had to find religion fast as cars pass within a foot or two of my life.

The reward for an 8 or 10 mile uphill is an 8 or 10 mile downhill.  That seems fair.  For a headwind, however, there is no reward ... just cursing.

Dean
